Lamborghini only launched 2 new models in the last 10 years: the Murciélago and the Gallardo, both very popular vehicles in their own right. The 2011 Lamborghini Aventador signals a new era for the Italian supercar company, with an emphasis on handling and comfort as much as speed.
Now available in the UK, the new Lamborghini will carry a price tag of over £240,000 and is expected to remain in short supply. The design of the Aventador is reminiscent of the Murciélago, Diablo and Countach combined, while the squared-off edges look similar to the amazing Reventon. Certainly unique and quintessentially Lamborghini, the Aventador is sure to attract lots of attention wherever it goes. The 6.5-litre V12 isn't developed from the previous Murciélago engine. Lamborghini spent years developing a brand new engine, capable of revving to an impressive 8,250rpm and generating 691bhp adn 509lb.ft of torque. The result: with a top speed of 217mph, the Aventador is capable of reaching 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds. This light, powerful engine is complemented by a carbonfibre monocoque, offering greater strength while saving a significant amount of weight in the process. The chassis and aluminium frames weighs in at 229kgs, helping keep the overall weight of the supercar down to 1,575kgs, in line with a Mondeo Estate. Just like a Formula 1 car, it also comes with pushrod suspension for finer tuning and reduced unsprung weight. The doors of the Aventador open in classic scissor-fashion, reminiscent of older Lamborghini models and making it easy to get in and out of the supercar. Starting the car feels just like sitting in a fighter jet: once you've treaded the break, you need to flip up a red cover to reveal the starter button. The Aventador comes with 7-speed automated manual 4-wheel drive. You can switch between the gentle Strada mode to enjoy a smooth drive that's perfectly appropriate for the city; and the sharper Sport mode which delivers stiffer suspension and quicker gear changes. The standard carbon ceramic brakes are highly effective in bringing the speed right down, while the four-wheel drive provides stability even at high speeds. The cabin offers plenty of space with good visibility. Add to this air conditioning and this new Lamborghini feels more comfortable than any of its predecessors. While some fans might see this as a tempering of the crazy Lamborghini spirit, they needn't worry: as soon as it is switched on, the sound and feel of the engine is instantly recognisable. Why not have a go at winning a supercar at Best of the Best? There's a guaranteed winner every month and you can choose your favourite car with Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and Aston Martin models all up for grabs for as little as £20.

It seems that 13 years of Audi ownership have allowed Lamborghini to freely explore its potential and thoroughly review the technology on which it had relied for many years. The Aventador suggests it has been time well spent.
