It could be the most expensive pile-up of all time: an accident in Japan involving 14 top of the range supercars including 8 Ferraris, 3 Mercedes and a Lamborghini is estimated to have cost a total of £2.5 million. Although the drivers were said to be recovering, the cars are reported to be in such bad condition they will all have to be scrapped.
10 drivers including 5 men and 5 women were reported to be hurt, although none was thought to be in life threatening condition. Reports suggest that a Ferrari lost control in wet conditions, hitting the central reservation and colliding with the other supercars. The damage done to the vehicles was so severe it took officials 6 hours to clean up the 400 meters of road where the accident took place. It is thought that 2 Ferrari 355s, 2 Ferrari 430s, 2 Ferrari 360 Modenas, one Lamborghini Diablo and a Toyota Prius hybrid were lost in the crash. According to highway patrol man Eiichiro Kamitani: "I've never seen such a thing." "Ferraris rarely travel in such large numbers." "It is highly possible that they were driving in couples." Although the Gumball Rally in Europe is famous for its fair share of supercar crashes, this is thought to be one of the most expensive road accidents of all time. (Image: AP)

Such beautiful motors... Now little more than twisted pieces of metal. As an avid Ferrari fan who could only hope to own one of these by winning it in a competition, reading this story makes for a painful experience indeed! I feel sorry for the owners and hope they were insured...
