The BBC have banned production of a recently released Top Gear edition of the TomTom Go Live sat nav featuring Jeremy Clarkson. Announced only last week, it features Top Gear branding on the box with The Stig wearing his famous white driving outfit. The sat nav deal, which could have been profitable in the run-up to Christmas, was scrapped due to conflicts with the corporation's editorial policy.
After the deal was agreed between BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the corporation, and TomTom, heads a the BBC concluded that a BBC TV presenter cannot endorse any driving related products. According to the Telegraph, the product is to be abandoned. While they are understandably disappointed by the ruling, Halfords have announced that they intend to continue selling the sat nav until stocks run out. "We are disappointed with the decision by the BBC on behalf of our customers who told us they loved the product. It was proving hugely popular", said Halfords in a press statement. "While we have plenty of stock at the moment we will not be able to replace them when they are gone, so the strident tones of Mr Clarkson will be appearing in Halfords for a limited time only and after that he will be silenced, at least on a satnav”,"said a Halfords representative. In an email sent out today, Halfords went on to say that the sat nav is "already one of the biggest selling products of the day!" You can get your hands on one of the last remaining copies of the limited edition Top Gear TomTom Go Live on the Halfords website.
